Santa Clara transforming old district into entertainment hub
Northern Santa Clara is transforming an old manufacturing hub into a bustling neighborhood that promises to bring in new business and entertainment zones.
City officials bill the new Clara district as an up-and-coming entertainment hub with the added bonus of more housing and public parks. Mayor Lisa Gillmor said the community surrounding Levi's Stadium is desperately seeking a city revival.
"I think the people that have lived on the North side forever, are really starving for restaurants, entertainment, stores, any kind of recreational activities," Mayor Gillmor said.
At the center of the district is a luxury apartment complex of the same name, with more than 500 units and a senior living facility and public park next to it. Seniors have access to free meals, all day activities and car services. Those staying in the main complex get everything from gym access to a pool.
"There's going to be some growing pains putting so many people in a smaller area, as you can see, this is a lot denser than the rest of our city," Mayor Gillmor said. "So, it's going to be a little change for everybody to live together."
Chris Corpuz, the general manager at Chicken Meets Rice near the development, watched the complex expand.
He told CBS News Bay Area that he hopes the buildings tenants bring more foot traffic to his business and develop night life.
